Growing conditions
Sun: Part shade to dappled shade
Soil: Average (adaptable once established)
Care: Regular watering during the first growing season helps roots establish and plants settle in
Why we love this garden
• Anchored by Eastern Columbine, bringing early spring color and movement to shaded spaces
• Structured with Christmas Fern, an evergreen native that provides year-round presence
• Grounded by Pennsylvania Sedge, forming a soft, flowing carpet that knits the garden together
• Layered with Foamflower in spring and White Wood Aster in late summer and fall for extended seasonal interest
Why wildlife loves this garden
• Eastern Columbine is one of the most important hummingbird nectar plants in eastern North America; its red flowers are shaped precisely for their long bills
• Foamflower and White Wood Aster provide nectar and pollen across the growing season
• Host plant for the Columbine Duskywing and Columbine Borer Moth, and White Wood Aster supports the Pearl Crescent butterfly
• Dense ground cover and evergreen foliage create shelter, nesting material, and winter refuge
• Seeds and structural stems continue supporting birds and insects beyond bloom time
