Late-season color · Shade gardens
Growing conditions
- Sun: Part sun to full shade
- Soil: Average to dry (adaptable)
Plant details
- Size: ~1.5–3 ft tall × 1–2 ft wide
- Blooms: Late summer to fall
- Deer resistant: Yes
Why we love it
- Unlike most goldenrods that need full sun, this one blooms in shade and lights up woodland edges and shady borders in fall when almost nothing else is flowering
- Small clusters of yellow flowers line the full length of every arching stem, wrapping around it like a garland, hence its common name
Why wildlife loves it
- Critical late-season nectar source for pollinators
- Host plant for 125 species of butterflies and moths
- Birds forage on the seeds
Fun to see
- On fall days, the stems can be alive with dozens of insects at once, all fueling up before winter
