Why we love it

  • Sweetly fragrant flowers fill the garden with scent in midsummer
  • A beautiful foundation or border shrub with a naturally rounded form
  • Dark green foliage provides a lush backdrop through the growing season before turning bright yellow in fall
  • Gradually forms a dense hedge through suckering, making it excellent for privacy, naturalized plantings, and erosion control
  • Long bloom period provides color when many spring-flowering shrubs have finished blooming

Why wildlife loves it

  • Fragrant flower spikes attract bees, butterflies, hummingbirds, and many other pollinators
  • Host plant for several moth species
  • Seeds provide food for birds later in the season
  • Dense branching offers excellent shelter and nesting cover for birds and other wildlife

Fun to see

Look closely at the small, dry seed capsules left behind after bloom. Their shape and clustering are exactly what earned this shrub its common name, "pepperbush," even though they have no relation to actual pepper.
