Why we love it

  • Golden-yellow petals surround a rich dark brown central cone giving it a bold, graphic look that stays in bloom from July into September, bringing sustained color to the garden
  • Expands over time through rhizomes and self-seeding, helping fill in garden spaces

Why wildlife loves it

  • Valuable nectar source for bees, butterflies, and other pollinators
  • Host plant for moths, including the Wavy-lined Emerald moth
  • Seed heads provide food for birds in fall and winter

Fun to see

  • Wavy-lined Emerald moth caterpillars disguise themselves as they feed by attaching bits of petals to their bodies with silk
