Why we love it

  • A beautiful native alternative to invasive Japanese honeysuckle
  • Bronze-red new foliage in spring matures to green, then turns shades of orange and purple in fall
  • Long-lasting yellow flowers create weeks of color in the summer garden
  • Forms dense thickets that are ideal for low hedges, shrub borders, woodland gardens, driveway plantings, and erosion control on slopes
  • Arching branches and exfoliating bark add texture and winter interest

Why wildlife loves it

  • Trumpet-shaped flowers attract hummingbirds, bumblebees, hawk moths, and other pollinators; bumblebees are its most important pollinator
  • Leaves serve as a host plant for native moth species, including the Snowberry Clearwing and Laurel Sphinx
  • Caterpillars provide an important food source for nesting birds
  • Dense, suckering growth offers shelter and nesting cover for birds and other wildlife
  • Seed capsules persist into late fall, adding seasonal interest

Fun to see

As the flowers are pollinated, they gradually change color from bright yellow to shades of peach, salmon, and red, creating a multicolored display on a single shrub.
