Why we love it
-
A compact native shrub that is perfect for small spaces, borders, slopes, and rocky areas
-
A nitrogen-fixing plant that forms a beneficial relationship with soil bacteria
-
Develops a deep, reddish taproot that helps it withstand drought but doesn't like to be moved once established
Why wildlife loves it
-
Fragrant white flowers provide nectar and pollen for native bees, butterflies, moths, and other beneficial insects
-
Serves as a larval host plant for Spring Azure and Summer Azure butterflies
-
Seeds provide food for birds and other wildlife
Fun to see
If you see azure caterpillars feeding on the leaves, you may also find ants. The caterpillars secrete a "honeydew" food for the ants and in return, the ants defend them from predators.
What to expect at pickup
Ground covers and ferns are sold as young, well rooted plugs. Shrubs are sold in 1 gallon containers.
Because this is a fall collection, some plants may have limited foliage or may be beginning to enter dormancy at pickup. This is a normal seasonal change. Their roots are healthy and ready to establish after planting.
