Why we love it

  • A tough, adaptable shrub for borders, hedges, privacy screens, slopes, and naturalized plantings
  • White to pink flowers, drooping clusters of reddish seed capsules, fall foliage, and exfoliating bark provide interest across four seasons

Why wildlife loves it

  • Nectar and pollen source for native bees, butterflies, and other beneficial insects
  • Serves as a larval host plant for numerous moth species, including the striking Io moth
  • Dense branching provides shelter and nesting habitat for songbirds and other small wildlife

Fun to see

Papery outer strips of the shaggy bark curl and peel away in winter, revealing shades of reddish and light brown beneath.

What to expect at pickup

Ground covers and ferns are sold as young, well rooted plugs. Shrubs are sold in 1 gallon containers.

Because this is a fall collection, some plants may have limited foliage or may be beginning to enter dormancy at pickup. This is a normal seasonal change. Their roots are healthy and ready to establish after planting.
