Ground layer · Shade gardens
Growing conditions
- Sun: Part shade to full shade
- Soil: Average to moist, well-drained
Plant details
- Size: ~6–12 in tall × spreading
- Blooms: Mid-spring
- Deer resistant: Yes
Why we love it
- Delicate bottlebrush flowers made up of tiny star-shaped blooms feel soft and fairy-like in the spring landscape
- Heart-shaped leaves form a soft, tidy carpet close to the ground
- The leaves often develop bronze mottling in fall, giving the plant a second moment of interest
Why wildlife loves it
- Valuable mid-spring nectar source for early native bees emerging when few shade plants are yet in bloom
- Seeds and plant structure provide shelter and foraging opportunities for ground-level insects
Fun to see
- Tiny native bees (picture a grain of rice) visit the flower spikes
What to expect at pickup
Ground covers and ferns are sold as young, well rooted plugs. Shrubs are sold in 1 gallon containers.
Because this is a fall collection, some plants may have limited foliage or may be beginning to enter dormancy at pickup. This is a normal seasonal change. Their roots are healthy and ready to establish after planting.
