Why we love it

  • A compact native shrub that is perfect for small spaces, borders, slopes, and rocky areas

  • A nitrogen-fixing plant that forms a beneficial relationship with soil bacteria

  • Develops a deep, reddish taproot that helps it withstand drought but doesn't like to be moved once established

Why wildlife loves it

  • Fragrant white flowers provide nectar and pollen for native bees, butterflies, moths, and other beneficial insects

  • Serves as a larval host plant for Spring Azure and Summer Azure butterflies

  • Seeds provide food for birds and other wildlife

Fun to see

If you see azure caterpillars feeding on the leaves, you may also find ants. The caterpillars secrete a "honeydew" food for the ants and in return, the ants defend them from predators.
