Why we love it

  • Large, cloud-like clusters of white flowers brighten shady gardens through the summer
  • Fast-growing and easy to grow in a variety of garden soils
  • Blooms on new wood, making it easy to prune. Cut stems to the ground in late winter for the best shape and vigorous new growth.
  • Gradually forms a colony, making it an excellent choice for naturalized plantings, informal hedges, and woodland edges
  • Long bloom period provides weeks of interest in the summer garden

Why wildlife loves it

  • Flowers attract a variety of native pollinators
  • Leaves serve as a host plant for the Hydrangea Sphinx moth
  • Caterpillars provide an important food source for nesting birds
  • Dense branching provides cover for birds and other wildlife

Fun to see

As the flowers mature, the bright white blooms gradually age to soft green before drying on the shrub, adding subtle interest well into fall.
