Woodland-inspired · Spring to fall interest · Designed for tough shade

Available May 23–May 30 · Pickup at the Montclair Farmers Market (Walnut Street Station)

This woodland-inspired planting brings softness, seasonal bloom, and quiet resilience to challenging shade. Layered with a flowing ground cover, spring color from Wild Geranium, and fall bloom from Heart-leaved Aster, this design creates a calm, naturalistic garden that feels at home beneath trees and along shaded edges.

As with all Hope Grows gardens, this planting was thoughtfully designed for Northern New Jersey landscapes, helping you confidently plant areas that often feel challenging.

  • A professionally designed planting layout showing spacing and placement
  • A rendered garden image to help you visualize the finished planting
  • Individual plant cards with growing conditions and ecological notes

Optional add-on:
A life-size 9-plant roll-out planting template for step-by-step guidance.

What this garden needs

  • Sun: Part shade to full shade
  • Soil: Average to dry (adaptable)
  • Care: Regular watering during the first growing season to help roots establish

Why we love this garden

  • Pennsylvania Sedge forms a soft, flowing ground layer that brings cohesion and movement
  • Wild Geranium adds fresh spring color and beautifully textured foliage
  • Heart-leaved Aster carries the garden into fall with abundant blue blooms
  • After the spring bloom of Wild Geranium and before fall’s Heart-leaved Aster, the garden settles into a quieter mid-summer rhythm, carried by the soft texture of Pennsylvania Sedge and Wild Geranium’s foliage

Why wildlife loves this garden

  • Early nectar from Wild Geranium supports emerging spring pollinators — including a specialist mining bee, the Cranesbill Miner, found only on this plant
  • Late-season nectar from Heart-leaved Aster provides critical fall food for bees and butterflies
  • Wild Geranium hosts 25+ species of moths and butterflies; Heart-leaved Aster hosts the Pearl Crescent butterfly, the Brown-hooded Owlet moth, and attracts 36 species of specialist bees
