Why we love it
- Just when summer color fades, clouds of soft blue flowers appear in fall, bringing light and abundance to shaded gardens late in the season
- Thrives in tough, shady spots where many plants struggle
- Distinctive heart-shaped leaves form a pleasing base earlier in the season
Why wildlife loves it
- Important source of nectar and pollen for pollinators in fall, when food is scarce
- Supports several specialist mining bees
- Host plant for some butterflies and moths
Fun to see
- The center of the flower shifts from yellow to pink after pollination and as the blooms age
