  • Deer Resistant: sometimes

Why we love it

  • Showy, cheerful perennial with bold pinkish purple color
  • Blooms reliably through most of summer
  • Seed heads add sculptural interest to the winter garden

Why wildlife loves it

  • Provides rich nectar for bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds
  • Seed heads feed birds when left standing into fall and winter

Fun to see

  • Notice how large butterflies land on the central cone. It’s actually hundreds of tiny flowers packed into a sturdy landing pad, allowing heavier pollinators to fuel up without the flower drooping.
