Why we love it

  • Striking blue-green foliage in spring and summer shifts to rich reds and oranges in fall, aging to soft brown in winter
  • Fluffy silver seed heads emerge in fall and last through winter extending the plant’s beauty
  • Its fine texture and upright form make bold flowering plants around it stand out

Why wildlife loves it

  • Queen bumble bees nest at the base where they safely overwinter
  • Host plant for many skipper butterflies, including Cobweb, Leonard’s, and Dusted Skippers
  • Small songbirds eat the seeds

Fun to see

  • Birds pulling at the dry blades in spring to line their nests
